Artificial grass has an impressive , making it a durable and cost-effective product. What’s even better is that most artificial turfs can be recycled, so there’s no need to worry about its environmental impact. Despite this, it was recently revealed that California doesn’t recycle artificial grass from residential properties. Thankfully, synthetic turf recycling initiatives are being launched. So, let’s find out more about responsibly disposing of artificial turf.
Is it worth recycling artificial turf?
You may think if , why should I? The answer is because it’s good for the environment. Many people buy artificial grass because it’s better for the environment than real grass. There’s no need to water artificial turf to keep it looking good. You also don’t need to use pesticides and fertilizers to keep fake grass healthy. The  is lower than the impact caused by real grass, too, as it produces fewer air pollutants.
Check with your local recycling center
When your artificial grass has come to the end of its life and you don’t want to repurpose it, the first thing you should do is speak to your local recycling center. Some will happily take your old synthetic turf, but others may not. You’re also likely to have to pay to dispose of it. The York Daily Record reports that the average cost is $60 to $70 per ton. This cost is because artificial turf is heavy and takes up a lot of room. The recycling process is also complicated as the parts have to be separated and sorted. The company that installed your turf may also be able to advise on the best way to recycle it. So, if you don’t have any luck with the recycling center, get in touch with them. They may even pick it up for you!
Repurpose it
Artificial grass should always be disposed of responsibly. While your turf may have come to the end of its lifespan in your garden, it may still be good enough to use elsewhere. Otherwise, speak to your local recycling center or the company that installed your turf.
