Students at the Science and Technology Academy at Knights Landing (Sci-Tech KL) are taking action to reduce waste and promote sustainability with a new composting and recycling program. This initiative, supported by Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD), Yolo County Central Landfill, and Blueblossom Consulting, teaches students hands-on waste management skills while helping the school comply with California Senate Bill 1383. This bill requires the diversion of organic and recyclable waste from landfills to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

During the 鈥淏ig Science Friday鈥� event held on January 31, Sci-Tech KL students and teachers learned about proper waste sorting from Blueblossom and Yolo County recycling staff. They sorted materials into recyclables (plastic bottles, milk cartons, and juice boxes), compostables (food scraps, food soiled paper, and napkins), and landfill waste (plastic straws, wrappers, and utensils) and weighed each category. The waste data was turned over to sixth grade students to analyze and generate ideas for reducing their school鈥檚 waste. Initial results show that around 70% of the school鈥檚 cafeteria waste can be recycled or composted. Since February 3, students have been separating organics and recyclables during meals with ongoing support from WJUSD custodial staff and student helpers.
鈥淭he goal is not to just be in compliance with SB 1383, but long-term waste reduction habits,鈥� added Marissa Juhler, Yolo County Central Landfill Director. 鈥淭o support rural schools in our community, we also offer free landfill tours and school bus funding to help students see where their waste goes.鈥�
