The GLOW Region Solid Waste Management Committee recycled nearly 300 tons of office paper in 2015, with Livingston County contributing more than 60 percent of that total.

The Committee鈥檚 County Office Paper Recycling Program collects three types of paper: office mix, such as colored paper, envelopes, file folders and junk mail; newspapers and magazines, and corrugated cardboard.

Livingston County recycled 189.49 tons of office paper in 2015, easily the most among the three participating counties. Livingston鈥檚 tonnage represents 63.7 percent of the 297.37 tons collected in 2015, according to the Solid Waste Management Committee鈥檚 annual report.

Genesee County recycled 77.72 tons, or 26.1 percent. Wyoming County contributed 30.16 tons, or 10.1 percent.
With tipping fees at local landfills averaging $45 per ton, the counties saved an estimated $13,381.65 in disposal fees in 2015, according to the Committee鈥檚 annual report.

The program began in Genesee County in 1990 and expanded in 1995. In 1996, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties joined the program. Orleans County left the Solid Waste Management Committee in 2003.

Livingston County is the all-time leader among the three current counties, having recycled 999.42 tons. Genesee County has recycled 962.65 tons, and Wyoming County has recycled 832.51 tons. The program has recycled a total of 3,063.80 tons, which includes Orleans County鈥檚 participation through 2003.
