Recycle Ann Arbor has launched Boost Reuse, a new program focused on reuse and repair, partially funded by a waste reduction sponsorship from the Washtenaw County Water Resources Materials Management Division. Boost Reuse is a community reuse drive initiative with the objective of developing and promoting reuse programs at the Drop-Off Station and Recovery Yard to move materials up the zero waste hierarchy. This initiative aligns with Recycle Ann Arbor’s goal to reduce and divert municipal solid waste in Washtenaw County. The Boost Reuse program, through collaboration with local community partners, will raise awareness about the benefits of reuse in conserving natural resources by extending the life of products, thereby reducing the need for extracting new raw materials to make new products. Additionally, reuse programs can foster a sense of community and help build a culture of sustainability and responsibility, inspiring others to adopt similar practices. Reuse initiatives such as Boost Reuse, repair shops, and second-hand retail stores, among others, also contribute to local job creation and support the circular economy as part of Washtenaw County’s zero waste goals.

The Boost Reuse program kicked off its inaugural event with a used bike drive starting on August 19^th and running through October 18^th. Used or unwanted bicycles of any type and condition can be dropped off at the Drop-Off Station or Recovery Yard, and donors will receive free entry to recycle their traditional recyclables on the same day (limit one free entry per person) for one-stop convenience. Usable and repairable bikes will be donated to local partner organizations, Common Cycle and Milan Bike Guy. These organizations will repair and distribute the bikes to those in need within our community. Bikes that are beyond repair will be salvaged for usable parts and then recycled at Recycle Ann Arbor facilities, helping to keep all materials local with zero waste.

Boost Reuse will host several reuse collection drives throughout the year, such as books, gardening equipment/supplies, school/office supplies, etc., to promote and provide collection support to local community organizations that will distribute the materials to members of our community that can put them to good re-use!
