The NWRA Women鈥檚 Council announced its eight scholarship recipients. The Council established an educational scholarship program in 2007 to assist qualified individuals in their pursuit of an education that will lead to productive careers in the environmental industry. All NWRA member company employees and their dependents are eligible to apply. To date, $300,000 has been awarded. The 2021 scholars will be awarded $5,000 each.

鈥淭his year鈥檚 pool of candidates was exceptional, and this year鈥檚 class of scholars are wonderful examples of those dedicated to our industry,鈥 said Tammy Holtzman, chair of the Scholarship Committee. Scholarship funds are made possible by the generous donations of companies and fundraising activities such as the Split the Pot Raffle.

Diana Amador-Ponce 鈥 McGregor, Texas,聽Employee 鈥 AP Clerk, Waste Connections, Texas,聽Tarleton University 鈥 Accounting

Recognized for being a hard worker, Diana currently works as an accounts payable (AP) clerk and has plans to attend Tarleton University to study accounting and further her career.聽She plans to be the next controller, or maybe the next accounting coach!聽She loves to learn and is thrilled to be going back to school.

Margaret Carter 鈥揅harleston, South Carolina,聽Dependent of Employee 鈥 Republic Services,聽Rising Freshmen 鈥 Clemson University 鈥 Accounting

Margaret is the daughter of Rob Carter of Republic Services, an active legislative member of the NWRA Carolinas chapter.聽Her father, an industry veteran, serves as a role model who has demonstrated the value of the waste and recycling industry as well as the importance of giving back to their community.聽Margaret is a swimmer and accomplished violist at Charleston County School of the Arts.聽She will be pursuing an accounting degree at Clemson University in the fall.

Jarrin Lawton 鈥 Rancho Cordova, California,聽Employee 鈥 Operations Management Trainee, Waste Management,聽Southern New Hampshire University 鈥 Business

Jarrin is currently participating in Waste Management鈥檚 management training program.聽He has worked hard to implement his LOL mindset of 鈥淟isten, Observe, Learn鈥 to grow his knowledge of the industry and become an asset to the company.聽Jarrin is a published author, motivational speaker and was recognized as the Texas Christian University鈥檚 Texas Youth Entrepreneur of the Year.聽He plans to continue studying operations management at Southern New Hampshire University.

Javier Magdaleno 鈥 Bolingbrook, Illinois,聽Employee 鈥 Engineer, Perkins Manufacturing,聽Purdue University/Northwest 鈥 Mechanical Engineering

Javier has been a valued team member of Perkins Manufacturing for four years.聽While Javier has worked in several industries gaining an education in electrical engineering, he found his passion and love for the waste and recycling industry when he joined Perkins.聽He enjoys collaborating with team members, is determined to grow professionally within the organization and is eager to complete his BA in mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

Tate Moeller 鈥 Minneapolis, Minnesota,聽Employee 鈥 Business Development 鈥 ESG,聽University of Vermont 鈥 Sustainable Innovations 鈥 MBA

Tate is currently Business Development Partner 鈥 Processing Solutions for Environmental Solutions Group (ESG).聽Tate has worked in the waste and recycling industry since 2016 when she worked as an intern and then a full-time employee at Organix Solutions.聽From there, she was still dreaming of getting her MBA in Sustainable Innovation.聽This fall, Tate will attend University of Vermont as a full-time student.聽The university鈥檚 program mission statement reads: 鈥渢his MBA is designed to create change agents to lead a business place that works for both people and the planet.鈥

Lisa Taylor 鈥 Bonner Springs, Kansas,聽Employee 鈥 Scale House Attendant 鈥 Waste Management,聽Kansas City Community College 鈥 Business Administration

Lisa currently works for Waste Management as a scale house attendant.聽She follows in the footsteps of her grandfather and great-grandfather, who both owned their own waste companies and made a name for themselves in the industry. Lisa plans to attend Kansas City Community College to study Business Administration and further her career in the industry.

Baylee Thompson 鈥 Rutland, Vermont,聽Employee 鈥 Accounts Payable Specialist, Casella Waste Systems,聽Champlain College 鈥 Accounting

Baylee is all about service and teamwork.聽She is currently an Accounts Payable Specialist and is going to attend Champlain College for accounting to further her career with Casella.聽Baylee is inspired by the following quote by Marian Wright Edelmen: 鈥淓ducation is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.

Danielle Womble 鈥 Vancouver, Washington,聽Employee 鈥 Commercial Recycle Coordinator, Waste Connections,聽Oregon State University 鈥 Sustainability

Danielle began her career in the waste and recycling industry as a coordinator/organics specialist and is now the Commercial Recycling Coordinator in Vancouver.聽She has always wanted to teach future generations about our world and how we can make better decisions to ensure it is healthy and that the choices we make are sustainable.聽Danielle will be attending Oregon State University to study Sustainability.
