Proving that the phrase “DSWM Cares” is more than just a hashtag, the Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) has rallied 14 dedicated code enforcement and bulky waste employees to lend a helping hand in Sarasota County, where the aftermath of two powerful storms has left a significant mark. Departing from the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue training facility in Doral, this passionate team is on a mission to tackle hurricane debris and restore hope to the affected communities.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her pride, stating, 鈥淭hese outstanding men and women are experts in dealing with post storm debris and have volunteered to help our fellow Floridians in their time of need, embodying the true spirit of public service. I couldn’t be prouder of our Miami-Dade family stepping up to support our neighbors and help speed the recovery.鈥

When Sarasota County called for reinforcements, Miami-Dade answered. These unsung heroes will dive into action, assisting with debris removal efforts by conducting volumetric assessments of storm-related debris and assisting many of Sarasota’s more than 1,000 gated communities. The seasoned team, headed to Sarasota will rely on their firsthand experience from the record-breaking recovery following Hurricane Irma, and ready to make a difference once again.

Department Director Aneisha Daniel, PhD, echoed the Mayor’s sentiment, reminiscing about the generous assistance received after Hurricane Irma. 鈥淣ow it’s our turn to pay it forward, and we’re more than happy to step up for our friends on the west coast,” she remarked. Dr. Daniel, who recently took the helm of one of the largest government-owned waste collection and disposal systems in the Southeast, leads this compassionate initiative.

The DSWM operates across 320 square miles, employing nearly 1,200 skilled professionals, including drivers, collectors, engineers, and environmental compliance officers.聽 This diverse team exemplifies Miami-Dade’s commitment to community service. On Friday, Mayor Levine Cava and Chief Operating Officer Jimmy Morales joined Dr. Daniel, Pete Gomez, Director of the Department of Emergency Management, and senior staff to wish the crew well during a heartfelt sendoff ceremony at the training facility. With personnel set to assist in Sarasota until November 1st, they are ready to bring hope and healing to those in need.
