Kittitas County Solid Waste announces the groundbreaking of the new Lower County Transfer Station, marking a significant step toward improving solid waste programs. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 30 at the project site, located at 2603 Green Avenue, Ellensburg, WA 98926, on the east side of US97, south of Old Hwy 10.
This 39-acre site will have 26,000-square-foot transfer station building that is designed to meet all regulatory requirements for municipal waste disposal. The site will also include a composting operation, a moderate-risk waste facility, and a recycling depot. With an estimated cost of $20 million, funded by loans and grants through the public works trust fund, this project will modernize waste disposal and support Kittitas County’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Site selection for this project began in 2017. Phase 1 of the project, consisting of utility work on US97 and the construction of Green Avenue, began in May 2021. The new transfer station will provide increased capacity and streamline services for the community. The project is expected to be completed by January 2026, with Belsaas and Smith serving as the general contractor.
The groundbreaking ceremony celebrated this important milestone in the County’s efforts to enhance solid waste services. The new facility represents a vital investment in the region’s future, with a focus on sustainability through recycling, composting, and environmentally responsible waste disposal.
