Anne Arundel County, Millersville Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility

The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works owns and manages the Millersville Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility located in Severn, Maryland. It is the only active municipal solid waste landfill owned by the County. Participants will see the landfill, the landfill-gas-to-electricity facility, cardboard baling operation and residential drop-off center.

Montgomery County鈥檚 Integrated Solid Waste Management Facilities

In 2015, the County received SWANA鈥檚 Gold Excellence Award for the category of Integrated Solid Waste Management Systems. The full-day tour will include four facilities:
Recycling Center鈥擳his facility received a SWANA 2004 Gold Recycling Excellence Award and a 2007 SWANA Gold Recycling Systems Award
Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station鈥擳he roof of the Shady Grove Processing Facility and the transfer station is the site of the Montgomery County Government鈥檚 first large-scale solar project. In 2003, this facility won the SWANA Silver Transfer Station award. The facility also achieved the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star status with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor in 2011, the highest safety program recognition available.
Resource Recovery Facility鈥擳his facility is the recipient of a SWANA Gold award, VPP Star designation, and is operated by Covanta.
Compost Facility鈥擳he facility is independently certified as ISO4001:2015 compliant Environmental Management System and is operated by Maryland Environmental Services.
Baltimore County Central Acceptance Facility and Eastern Sanitary Landfill

This full-day tour includes two facilities. First, the Central Acceptance Facility featuring three solid waste management activities. Second, the Eastern Sanitary Landfill highlights: an active municipal solid waste landfill; a transfer station operation for residential and commercial MSW; residents鈥� drop-off areas; yard waste composting; and a 3 megawatt (MW) landfill gas-to-energy plant and a landfill gas well field.
Fresh Kills Landfill/Freshkills Park in Staten Island

Journey by tour bus to explore what was once the largest landfill in the world. When finished in 2037, the landfill will function as a park covering 2,200 acres on Staten Island. Experience this highly engineered site and its infrastructure systems that manage landfill gas and leachate as you witness its transformation into an incredibly beautiful landscape. Following the tour, participants will travel by bus to midtown Manhattan to close out your ISWA World Congress & WASTECON 2017 journey by enjoying New York City鈥檚 sights or flying out of Newark, NJ airport. Otherwise, stay seated and travel back to Baltimore by bus.

Wheelabrator Baltimore WTE Facility

Operating since 1985, Wheelabrator Baltimore is a 64 MW waste-to-energy facility that uses up to 2,250 tons of post-recycled waste from area homes and businesses. In addition to fueling the plant鈥檚 operations, the renewable electricity is sold to the local utility鈥攖he equivalent of supplying the electrical needs of 40,000 Maryland homes. The plant provides steam to the downtown heating loop, which serves more than 230 businesses, including M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens. The waste-to-energy facility successfully reduces the volume of incoming waste by approximately 90 percent. It also recovers ferrous metals from the ash residue, which are shipped offsite to be recycled. Tour participants will follow trash as it comes into the receiving pit and moves throughout the system.
Baltimore City Quarantine Road Landfill

The Quarantine Road Landfill covers 125 acres and accepts annually approximately 330,000 tons of mixed waste and recycling. It is the only viable landfill in Baltimore City and is an essential component of the City鈥檚 solid waste program. The landfill currently accepts municipal solid waste, ash from solid waste combustion at the Wheelabrator waste-to-energy facility, industrial waste, City-owned wastewater treatment plant screenings and grit, and City-owned water and wastewater treatment plant residues. It also includes a recycling station that accepts single-stream recycling, electronics, waste oil, antifreeze, tires, scrap metal and white goods. In addition to seeing the landfill, participants will learn about the facility, which uses it to meet its federal mandates.

Baltimore City Marine Litter Prevention

This is a bus tour of sites focused on keeping trash out of the Baltimore Harbor. In addition to upstream prevention efforts such as street sweeping, storm drain screens, public trash cans and community enhancement efforts, participants will see Mr. Trash Wheel, the world鈥檚 first sustainably powered trash interceptor. The device uses solar and hydropower to turn a conveyor that lifts trash from the water. It is seen as an innovative, viable solution for removing trash from the oceans. Participants will view the Trash Wheel and hear from the owner and operator, as well as the company that invented the technology. In addition to viewing the Trash Wheel, tour participants will see a skimmer boat in action. The boat is one of a fleet of 13 vessels owned by the Baltimore Department of Public Works to collect trash and debris from the harbor.
