Flint residents will begin receiving the first of 68,000 residential garbage and recycling carts. Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, state and local officials are planning an event to pass out the first 64-gallon carts to residents on the city’s east side around Rollingwood Park off Western Road.

All 34,000 households in the city will receive plastic carts for regular trash and recycling this fall at no charge. Distribution likely will take about a month, but all residences should have their carts by Oct. 31.

Flint received a $1 million grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy and a $3.3 million grant from The Recycling Partnership to pay for the carts. Dow Chemical in Midland donated plastic resin used to make the carts and Cascade Engineering near Grand Rapids formed them.
