ecomaine announces the hiring of Zoe Malia, Sarah Folan, and Adam Clair to lead a new EPA grant-funded recycling education and outreach program for multi-family buildings across our service area. This exciting initiative will focus on improving recycling awareness, access, and utilization in apartments, condominiums, and other multi-unit residences 鈥 key areas for growth in Maine鈥檚 recycling efforts.

鈥淭his is a critical program for our organization and the communities we serve,鈥 said Jamie Garvin, ecomaine Director of Communications and Public Affairs. 鈥淗aving an impressive and highly capable team of 鈥榚comaineiacs鈥 like Zoe, Sarah, and Adam in place sets us up to develop and deliver a program that will make a significant impact.鈥

  • Zoe Malia brings a wealth of experience from her most recent role as Environmental Sustainability Manager at Allagash Brewing Company, where she led waste diversion projects and sustainability initiatives. Zoe is passionate about making sustainability accessible to communities of all types and as Program Manager will play a critical role in program strategy and implementation.
  • Sarah Folan joins us as Project Coordinator with a strong background in environmental science and hands-on experience in waste reduction and public outreach. She previously worked with Garbage to Garden鈥檚 Zero Waste Event Crew and has a knack for engaging diverse audiences with actionable recycling solutions.
  • Adam Clair, a familiar face to ecomaine, transitions into a Project Coordinator role from his internship with us, where he demonstrated exceptional initiative in educational programs and community outreach. His dedication to sustainability and recycling education makes him a perfect fit for this program.

Multi-family buildings present unique challenges for recycling, including limited space, varied levels of participation, and contamination issues. With support from a $2 million EPA grant, this program will:

  • Conduct outreach and education tailored to property managers, tenants, and owners.
  • Provide tools and resources to improve recycling accessibility and efficiency.
  • Work directly with communities to identify and overcome barriers to successful recycling.

Multi-family buildings are often underserved in traditional curbside recycling programs, which is why this initiative is so important. By addressing these challenges, we will not only improve recycling rates and reduce contamination but also advance ecomaine鈥檚 mission to reduce waste, promote sustainable practices, and keep Maine鈥檚 environment clean.
