Covanta, providing sustainable waste management and renewable energy, announces that Joey Neuhoff, vice president of client business management, has been named a 2014 Canadian Waste Sector Executive of the Year by the Ontario Waste Management Association (OWMA). Now in its second year, the Canadian Waste Sector Executive of the Year awards recognize the year鈥檚 most accomplished individuals in the private and public Canadian waste sector. 鈥淚鈥檓 deeply honored to receive this prestigious award from the OWMA,鈥 said Neuhoff. 鈥淥ntario is leading the way in sustainable waste management and I鈥檓 proud to have played a part through Covanta鈥檚 development efforts of the Durham York Energy Centre. I look forward to continuing our efforts in Canada to provide municipalities with sustainable waste solutions that generate clean energy and protect the environment.鈥

Neuhoff has led Covanta鈥檚 development efforts for the design and construction of the Durham York Energy Centre in Clarington, Ontario, the first greenfield Energy-from-Waste (EfW) project in North America since 1995. The EfW facility is nearing completion and will process 140,000 tonnes of post-recycled waste per year and generate 17.5 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to supply approximately 10,000 homes. 聽鈥淭he greatest assets that organizations in the waste and recycling arena have are their people, and that鈥檚 why OWMA and its national partners are pleased to recognize outstanding leaders like Joey Neuhoff through the annual Canadian Executive of the Year Awards,鈥 said Robert Cook, OWMA鈥檚 CEO. 鈥淛oey has displayed all the qualities that the selection committee looks for in award candidates including strong ethics, vision and leadership, innovative business achievements, and social/environmental responsibility, providing external value to his organization.鈥

OWMA also honored Mirka Januszkiewicz, Director of Waste Services from the Region of Durham, in the Large Municipality category. Januszkiewicz was recognized for her significant efforts in leading the successful development of the Durham York Energy Centre on behalf of Durham Region. Commenting on Januszkiewicz鈥檚 award Neuhoff said, 鈥淚 feel privileged to have worked closely with Mirka for the past five years on the development of the Durham York Energy Centre. She is an outstanding professional who is dedicated and results driven. Under her leadership, Durham Region鈥檚 programs have become a model for integrated sustainable waste and resource management.鈥 聽Winners were recognized at the Canadian Waste to Resource Conference that took place in Toronto from November 19 to November 20, 2014.
