Cape Cod Cooperative Extension鈥檚 Hazardous Materials Environmental Specialist, Kalliope Chute, celebrated a significant milestone with her 400th Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection event at the Bourne Landfill. The event was especially meaningful as it marked Kalliope鈥檚 final collection before her retirement in December, after a career dedicated to keeping Cape Cod鈥檚 drinking water clean and promoting safe disposal of household hazardous waste for Cape Cod residents and local small businesses.

In addition to this milestone, Kalliope has been recognized with two prestigious awards in 2024. The North American Hazardous Materials Management Association honored her for her extensive contributions to the Cape Cod community, environmental health, and safety in the hazardous materials field. Additionally, MassRecycle awarded Kalliope for her outstanding efforts in sustainable materials management, applauding her commitment to responsible waste disposal to protect Cape Cod鈥檚 environment.

Though she鈥檒l be retiring soon, Kalliope鈥檚 work will continue through the Barnstable County Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, ensuring that our water remains safe and that the community is informed on hazardous waste management. Her legacy of environmental stewardship will live on, inspiring Cape Codders to safeguard their surroundings.
