To cut聽as much聽climate pollution as聽taking half-a-million cars off the road, new state support聽will invest $130 million聽to grow聽California聽industry and jobs and聽help communities turn聽food and yard waste into clean energy and compost.聽California Climate Investments鈥 Organics Grant Program聽awards聽will聽accelerate the state鈥檚聽climate progress by keeping 7.7 million tons of organic聽waste from emitting methane climate pollution in landfills.聽Methane is a climate super聽pollutant聽with 84 times more heat-trapping power than carbon dioxide.
鈥淐alifornia鈥檚 latest investments聽in聽food and yard waste recycling聽will cut聽planet-heating聽pollution聽and grow California companies with new聽green聽jobs聽in our communities,鈥 CalRecycle聽Director Rachel Machi Wagoner said. 鈥淥rganic waste recycling聽is聽part of聽California鈥檚 climate fight聽as we move toward circular, local systems that continuously聽recycle what we used to throw away.鈥

The funded projects will recycle organic material into聽new products like:
- Compost 鈥 a聽superfood聽for soil to聽retain聽more聽water, and help plants:聽get more nutrients, use less pesticides,聽and pull more planet-heating carbon from the air.
- Biofuel 鈥 to fuel local bus or service truck fleets聽with less carbon pollution, or for聽clean energy to power buildings.
