4MyCiTy, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to environmental sustainability and combating food security, announces the grand opening of its first-ever Zero Waste Facility. This first-of-its-kind facility, located in Baltimore City, supports 4MyCiTy鈥檚 mission of 鈥淔rom Zero Waste to Zero Hunger,鈥 reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transforming waste into valuable resources for the community.
4MyCiTy will now be home to the nation鈥檚 largest indoor composter, a groundbreaking new machine capable of processing up to 6,000 pounds of food waste into certified usable soil within 24 hours. Combined with an outdoor composter that handles an additional 4,000 pounds, this innovative technology enables the facility to transform close to 10,000 pounds of food waste each day into nutrient-rich soil.
鈥淟aunching this Zero Waste Facility allows us to address the critical issue of food waste while taking actionable steps to create a sustainable and food-secure future for the families across Maryland,鈥 said Christopher Dipnarine, Founder of 4MyCiTy. 鈥淲ith the nation鈥檚 largest indoor composter, we will significantly reduce organic waste and greenhouse gas emissions, transforming waste into valuable resources for our community.鈥
The Zero Waste process at 4MyCiTy is a sustainable cycle that maximizes resources and minimizes waste. It begins with rescuing surplus food from local farms, distributors, and partners, which is then redistributed through dignified food programs to families across Maryland. Food that can no longer be consumed is processed in the facility鈥檚 cutting-edge composters, transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich soil within just 24 hours. This soil is then shared with local farms and community gardens, completing the cycle by returning valuable resources to the environment. Additionally, the facility serves as the home base for the 4MyCiTy U! Job Training and Mentoring Program, equipping youth aged 16-23 with hands-on experience in sustainability, waste management, and environmental stewardship.
Since its founding in 2018, 4MyCiTy has diverted 270 million pounds of organic waste from landfills, equivalent to approximately 60,891 passenger vehicles driven for one year or 281,314 metric tons of harmful CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) avoided.
4MyCiTy proudly unveiled its Zero Waste Facility, located at 1133 Wilso Drive, Baltimore, MD 21223, on Thursday, December 19, 2024. The event brought together the 4MyCiTy leadership team, volunteers, food rescue program participants, community partners, and local and state government officials.
